| RECREATION AND SPORTS
Cozumel is renowned as one of the greatest diving destinations in the world. The warm, exceptionally clear turquoise waters and abundance of coral reefs and sea life have attracted divers from around the globe.
Cozumel is visited each year by thousands of avid, novice and beginner divers alike. These coral-seeking, sea-life observing, masked men and women come to the island with a mission to dive amongst the 20 miles of some of the world's most spectacular reefs! Divers are enchanted by Cozumel year-round, as the relaxing blue waters remain crystal clear at all times with an average temperature between 77°F and 82°F. Cozumel also offers many other water sports for marine enthusiasts including snorkeling, swimming, fishing, windsurfing and parasailing. For the landlubber, horseback riding, tennis and hiking are among the most popular recreational activities on Cozumel.
Beaches
The golden beaches on the west coast of the island overlook calm waters.
Recommended spots include: Playa San Francisco, Chankanaab Lagoon and Playa San Juan.
The East Coast provides sandy smooth beaches alternating with rocky shores. The ebb and flow of the ocean on this side of the island produces strong waves and undertows.
The beaches Punta Morena, Punta Chiquero and Chen Rio are generally less populated than the west coast beaches.
An island favorite, Playa Oriente, is unmarked, but easy to find, as it is well known to the islanders.
TOURS & SIGHTSEEING
Cozumel is rich in history and in natural wonders. Tourists are invited to explore ancient Mayan ruins on the north side of the island and to visit the sanctuary of the fertility goddess Ixchel at San Gervasio.
Island mysteries are unlocked at the Museum of the Island of Cozumel that exhibits colorful displays about coral reefs and other national treasures.
The south side also provides ancient Mayan ruins including El Cedral the oldest structure on Cozumel, dating back to 800 A.D.
Near by is Punta Celarain, a white lighthouse that offers a 360º degree view. For nature enthusiasts the island features natural preserves such as the Cozumel Marine Reef National Park and Chankanaab Park and Lagoon as well as a jungle trail leading to the Botanical Gardens, featuring 300 types of tropical plants from more than 20 countries.
Another terrific spot for animal lovers is The Dolphinarium that opened on September 1998. Scheduled to open this coming winter (1998-1999) is Punta Sur, a new eco-turist park where visitors can learn about local species, sea-turtle preservation, crocodiles, wild flora and fauna and coral reefs.
The only town on the island, San Miguel, features the zocalo (town square) Plaza del Sol, and the Downtown Pier, two favorite destinations. On Sunday afternoons locals and tourists enjoy music, dancing and strolling.
