| Quintana Roo's northernmost island, Holbox lies in the Gulf of Mexico. Targeted for low density, low impact tourism development, it is a rustic hideaway with a peaceful ambiance.
Golf buggies and bikes are the only vehicles permitted in the fishing village and small, tropical-style thatched hotels, cabañas or cabins and restaurants line the beachfront. Holbox is part of the Yum Balam nature reserve.
The Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protected Area was created on June 5, 1994. It is located on the northern coast, in Lazaro Cardenas district and covers 154,052 square hectares. More than 12 kinds of vegetation are found here. |
